"The Lowlands"

"Netherlands" in Dutch means "The Lowlands", due to it's land mostly below sea level. If you look at the following images, you can see that most houses and buildings in the Netherlands are right at the same level as the water, similar to Venice. The Netherlands would have constant flooding if they did not create their many dams. They also have many rivers and lakes.
